Project Details

ENR New York’s 2018 Bridge Project of the Year features a Polyester Polymer Concrete (PPC) overlay on the cable-stayed precast panel deck to deliver a 100-year design service life. The P3 team operating a DBFOM contract with a 40-year concession selected PPC during the design process in place of the Latex Modified Concrete (LMC) overlay originally specified.

Project Solution

On projects like the Goethals bridge, PPC is faster and simpler to install than LMC. Our High Molecular Weight Methacrylate (HMWM) primer, a critical component to all our bridge preservation systems, works to adhere the PPC overlay soundly to the shot blasted precast panel deck without the need for the mechanical interlock of a roughened surface typically required for modified cementitious concrete overlays to achieve true composite action. The PPC overlay on the Goethals Bridge was finished with a saw-cut grooved texture days after placement by slip-form pavers and volumetric trucks.
